The Liberty County Public Safety Communications Center is a 24 hour a day, 365 day a year operation … that is to say, we never close.

Communications Officers (CO) work 12 hour shifts (0600 to 1800 and 1800 to 0600) with an unpaid one hour lunch break. COs work 3 days on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off, 2 on, 2 off every 14 days and have every other weekend off. Schedules rotate from days to nights and nights to days every 16 weeks.

Because the Communications Department is a mission critical organization, minimum staffing levels must be maintained. To that end Communications Officers are placed on “on-call” status at least one of their days off every 2 weeks and can be called in to fill any vacancy in the schedule that arises during that 24 hour period.

The schedule is demanding and together with the high stress level inherent with this profession, many people find it difficult to combine a career in public safety communications with the demands of family life.

Although this is a very rewarding career, before submitting your application, please consider the impact being appointed to this position would have on you and your family. This is a very demanding job and is truly not for everyone.
