The Liberty County Records Center houses records for Liberty County agencies and constitutional offices (i.e. the Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, Clerk of the Courts and the Probate Judge), the District Attorney, Child Support Enforcement, City of Hinesville, Liberty County School System, and Liberty Regional Medical Center. It should be pointed out that the record center is not open to the public. Any requests by the public for information must go through the appropriate Liberty County agency or office.
The Records Center is housed in a renovated post office building purchased by Liberty County in 1998. The cost of the building and the total renovation was just under one million dollars funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Palmer Dasher, former Assistant Liberty County Administrator, and his boss Joey Brown, Liberty County Administrator deserve special credit for making the Records Center a reality.
The Records Center is named for its first executive director Mr. Winston E. Walker III. Mr. Walker was an Alabama native who immersed himself in the history and activities of Liberty County. His numerous contributions were an inspiration to all who knew him. After his untimely death on October 7, 2004, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to name the building in his honor. Current staff consists of the Executive Director, a full time assistant records manager and a part-time records clerk.
All records are housed in a climate controlled atmosphere. Constant monitoring maintains the temperature at 68 degrees, and the humidity between 40 and 47 percent.
